June events

June 8th, 2011 No comments

It’s time for the Beach, BBQ’s, and spending some quality time with friends & family.
There’s a lot going on around here in the month of June. Check it out:

This Sunday
we’ll be hosting a 25 minute “Volunteer Showcase”. This is a chance to see what we as a staff & volunteers do every Sunday.

If you’d like to attend, simply stay in the auditorium after the 12noon service or contact our Volunteer Coordinator
Steve Cirillo: steve@truenorthchurch.net

The Free Union Church has been serving the community of Ocean Beach, Fire Island for over 90 years. True North has entered a partnership with them to help run their Sunday Services.
Beginning Sunday, June 19th we’ll be holding services here in Bohemia AND on Fire Island all summer until Sunday, September 11th.
Service on Fire Island will begin at 10:45am (one service only).  And while we will have TN staff & volunteers out there every week, the service itself will be a bit more traditional in nature.

We hope you’ll come out and visit. Ocean Beach can be accessed by the Fire Island Ferries running out of Bay Shore. We’ll be selling discounted tickets starting this Sunday.

On Monday, June 20th we’ll be hosting a Blood Drive from 2:30pm to 8:30pm. Help save a life, donate!

Did you know our new home as a church is a lot bigger than you might think?  Our building has a large, currently unused portion known as “Phase II”. This section of the building will eventually house a larger auditorium, lobby and help expand UpTown & Wild Kingdom.

On Saturday & Sunday, June 25th & 26th we’ll be having a Yard Sale (rain or shine) in Phase II. Not only will this help us unload “stuff” that has accumulated over the last 5 years, but proceeds from the sale will help us get started financially for our Phase II project.  If you have items that you’d like to donate to the Yard Sale, you can drop them off Sunday, June 12th- Thurs. June 16th & Sunday, June 19th.  If you need to drop off on the 17th or 18th, please call the church by Thurs to arrange. 631-476-3811

Items NOT to donate: lightly used toothbrushes, old socks, unwanted pets, any type of junk, etc.

Worship is defined as our response, both personal and corporate, to God–for who he is and what he’s done.  Every Sunday at church we gather for an hour to spend time with God, but it’s our hope that your desire to worship God will extend beyond Sunday mornings.

On Wednesday, June 22nd @ 7:30pm True North will be hosting a night of worship. This is a time for us to gather and sing to God. If you plan on attending night of worship we’d like to make a few requests:

1. If True North is not your home church, we request that you not attend the Night of Worship. That may sound a bit harsh, but our space will be limited and this is an event we want to celebrate with our church family – that is, the people who call our church “home”.

2. Night of Worship is a place for believers. Unlike most of our services, this is not a good night to invite your friends who are on the fence about their faith. This is a night to sing & lift your hands in worship to our creator.

Over 1 billion people do not have access to clean drinking water. The community groups of True North are partnering with Charity Water in a project called “Get Well”.

This summer we’ll be collecting and depositing water bottle. 100,000 bottles could dig a well in sub-Saharan Africa and give an entire village access to clean drinking water.

Bring your water bottles or deposits from recycling to True North and we’ll put it to our “Get Well” project. For more information on the water crisis visit www.charitywater.org

We will be holding a baptism at Cedar Beach in Mount Sinai on July 23rd @ 10:00 am. Signups will begin this Sunday.
Spectators are welcomed & encouraged!

Injustice

May 25th, 2011 2 comments

Perspective. It’s the lenses through which we view life. But what if our perspective was skewed? what if the picture we have of this world wasn’t accurate?

On Sunday, May 29th we’ll begin a new series titled “Injustice” we’ll be looking at the overlooked and bringing attention & awareness to the atrocities of our world.

On Sunday, June 5th we’ll be hosting a guest speaker, President and Co-founder of Love 146 Rob Morris. An organization committed to the eradication of child sex trafficking and exploitation.

Regardless of faith, backgrounds ,or moral codes, Injustice should never be tolerated.
We want to encourage you to invite your friends and family to this 2 week series.

One Gift

November 20th, 2009 No comments

This Christmas we’ve come up with a great way to give kids and adults an opportunity to be generous with gifts received.  It’s called One Gift!

What is One Gift?

We are inviting kids and adults to give up “one gift” and donate money to Love146.  Each Christmas we receive a multitude of gifts from various friends and family members. One Gift is an opportunity for adults and kids to use those gifts to impact children in need, and practice generosity.

How to Participate in One Gift:

  1. Pick a friend or family member who would normally give you a gift.
  2. Ask that person to write a check written out to True North Community Church, for the amount that he/she would have spent on your gift, Memo: One Gift
  3. Bring that check to True North and put it in the envelope marked One Gift.
  4. Praise God for His goodness.

One Gift works great with kids because it speaks their language and works within their currency.

Every dollar goes directly to Love146.  All donations are tax deductible.  Love146 is an organization that works with human trafficking, specifically working to abolish child sex slavery and exploitation.  For more information about Love146 go to www.love146.org

If you have any questions about One Gift please email Dominick@truenorthchurch.net.

**An Important Note for Parents**
If you’re going to encourage your children to participate in One Gift, there is only one rule: The child MUST be the one to make the choice if he/she wants to give up a gift. Also Love146 is an organization that deals with some very adult issues.  We need to be careful with the words that we use when we talk to our kids about Love146.
The way our UpTown staff explains Love146 to children is as follows:
“Love146 is an organization that helps children who were hurt to get
well and stay safe.”

Most of the children that Love146 rescue have lived in extreme poverty like most of us have never even seen.  It is okay to discuss poverty with your children, but be careful when discussing how the children were abused. It is also okay to say things like we are helping to support some of the world’s actual superheroes.  The people who are supported by Love146 real live superheroes.  It would do us all good to be more like these individuals.
